Caledonian MacBrayne (usually shortened to Cal Mac; Caledonian Mac a' Bhriuthainn in Scottish Gaelic) is the major operator of passenger and vehicle ferries between the mainland of Scotland and 22 of the major islands on Scotland's west coast. It is publicly owned and controlled by the Scottish Government.

NorthLink Ferries operates daily ferry services between mainland Scotland and the northern archipelagos of Orkney and Shetland. NorthLink Ferries operates two routes: Scrabster to Stromness, Orkney (90 minutes). Aberdeen to Lerwick, Shetland (12 hours 30 minutes northbound; 12 hours southbound), with some services also calling at Kirkwall, Orkney, in which case the journey time is increased by 2 hours).

Orkney Ferries operates the inter-island ferry services that link together the various islands of the Orkney Islands, to the north of the Scottish mainland in the United Kingdom. The company is owned by the Orkney Islands Council and was established in 1960 as the Orkney Islands Shipping Company.

P&O Ferries (formerly P&O European Ferries) is a constituent company of DP World (which took over its parent company, the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company (P&O) in March 2006). P&O Ferries is registered in Dover, Kent. P&O Ferries also operates a number of routes in the Irish Sea under the name P&O Irish Sea.

Pentland Ferries operate a daily ferry service between Gills Bay in Caithness, Scotland about 3 miles West of John o' Groats, and St Margaret's Hope on South Ronaldsay in Orkney. This route, known as The Short Sea Crossing, is generally considered to be the quickest route across the Pentland Firth, taking about 1 hour.

Smyril Line is a Faroese shipping company, linking the Faroe Islands and Iceland with Denmark, Norway, and the United Kingdom (Shetland and the mainland of Scotland). Since 1983 the company has operated a regular international passenger, car and freight service using a large, modern, multi-purpose ferry - the Norröna. The original vessel was a Swedish-built ferry formerly named Gustav Wasa (built in 1973). This was replaced by a purpose-built brand new ferry (also named Norröna) in 2003.

Stena Line is one of the world's largest ferry operators, with ferry services serving Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Great Britain, Ireland, Germany, Netherlands and Poland.
